"Quality and Patient Safety" is an eight semester required course for University of Florida College of Medicine students that focuses on the prevention of harm to patients caused by preventable adverse medical events as well as on the importance of organizational safety and quality improvement. The course was developed after Sebastian Ferrero died in order to begin to integrate patient safety training into undergraduate and graduate medical education. The goal of this curriculum is to nurture a culture of quality and safety at the University of Florida College of Medicine that enhances patient satisfaction and overall quality of care outcomes.
On Wednesday, October 29th at 9AM, the UF College of Medicine community officially inaugurated the “Quality and Patient Safety” course by holding the first of a series of Patient Safety Grand Rounds. This session focused on the impact of preventable adverse events upon patients and families and was specifically intended for first-year medical students to learn how to improve communication with their future patients.
This event was open to members of the University of Florida Health Science Center and attended by more than 200 people. Horst and Luisa Ferrero were the keynote speakers. By sharing their personal story of tragic loss, the Ferrero family taught the students about the lifelong impact of an adverse medical event and shared their insights into how the UF and Shands medical system responded to the death of their son, Sebastian.
Horst and Luisa will personally participate in this curriculum every fall.
